Tumil-K® Tablets, Powder and Gel
(Potassium Gluconate)

Tumil-K is indicated as a supplement in cats and dogs with potassium deficiency. Potassium depletion now appears to be a serious and a relatively common disorder in cats especially those with renal disease. Treatment is relatively straightforward once the condition is recognized, although the diagnosis may not be readily apparent. This difficulty stems largely from the fact that serum potassium concentrations may not accurately reflect total body potassium stores. In addition, most of the signs of potassium depletion are nonspecific and may mimic other disorders, many of which are associated with old age. (1)

There are three primary mechanisms by which potassium may be depleted: excessive urinary potassium loss, excessive gastrointestinal loss, and decreased dietary intake. Of these, renal losses are by far the most important. Renal regulation of potassium excretion and secretion occurs primarily in the distal nephron, specifically in the cortical collecting ducts.

The three primary stimuli for potassium excretion are increased aldosterone concentration, increased plasma potassium concentration, and increased tubular flow rate. Common causes of renal potassium wasting include hyperaldosteronism (primary or secondary), renal tubular acidosis (proximal or distal; primary or secondary), and other diseases characterized by excessive urine flow (e.g., diabetes mellitus).(1) Chronic renal failure can cause most of these abnormalities and is the most common cause of hypokalemia.
In addition, hypokalemia can impair renal function.

Tumil-K delivers 2mEq of potassium gluconate in each caplet,1/4 level teaspoonful of powder or each 1/2 teaspoonful of gel. The powder is available in a 4oz dispensing size with a convenient dosing spoon enclosed. Tumil-K caplets are available in 100 count bottles. Tumil-K is also available in a 5oz gel.

The suggested dose of Tumil-K for adult cats and dogs is one caplet, 1/4 level teaspoonful (0.65g) of powder or 1/2 teaspoonful (468mg) of gel per 10 lbs (4.5kg) body weight twice daily.
Dosage may be adjusted to satisfy patient's need.

Precautions: Do not administer to cats with acute, oliguric or anuric or advanced renal failure. See package insert for additional precautions.
This product must be prescribed by a licensed veterinarian.
